Donald W. Kaniaru is the Managing Partner of Kaniaru & Kaniaru Advocates, in Nairobi, Kenya. A Lawyer and advocate by training, he formerly served as the Director of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation and as Director of the Division on Environmental Conventions with UNEP. He worked with UNEP for many years and thereafter served as Special Legal Adviser to the Executive Director. He also served as Senior Consultant to several UN bodies including UNEP, UN Habitat, UNDP and UNEP/WMO on climate issues. He is a member of several professional and environmental bodies including the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, and the International Council of Environmental Lawyers (ICEL), for whom he serves as representative to the UN in Kenya. He was a trustee for ten years of the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Washington, DC, still serves as Trustee of the Institute of Governance and Sustainable Development, also in Washington DC and was a member of the ICIPE Governing Council from 2004 to 2018. He served as Chairman of the National Environment Tribunal of Kenya from 2005 to end 2013.
Mr. Kaniaru is an accomplished, dedicated diplomat and environmentalist.
